Renewing Memories with A Farmhouse Remodel

Retirement often marks the beginning of a new chapter in life—a time for reflection, reconnection, and rejuvenation. Our clients, a retired couple originally from the area, were brought back to a place filled with cherished memories— a beautiful, beloved farmhouse that had once belonged to the wife’s grandmother. The desire for change and the need to infuse fresh life into their living space led them to embark on a remodeling journey with Ken Spears Construction.

Overview of the Project

The farmhouse held a special place in the hearts of our clients. It had witnessed generations come and go, and the time had come to honor its legacy by modernizing its interior while preserving the timeless essence that had made it a cherished family haven.

The couple’s vision for the project was clear: they sought to update the finishes, revamp the kitchen’s functionality, and maintain the farmhouse’s era-specific charm. While change was on the horizon, preserving the original elements that held sentimental value was paramount.

Challenges for the Homeowner

Our client’s challenges were multi-faceted, requiring a thoughtful and expert solution.

Better Layout & Functionality

The existing kitchen layout hindered their ability to cook and fully enjoy their home. Aesthetically, the kitchen was outdated and lacked the pleasing elements the couple desired, with aging cabinets, flooring, and ceiling tiles. The appliances were scattered haphazardly, and the couple yearned for a more efficient arrangement with increased storage. Two entrances disrupted the flow, with one entrance from the kitchen left unused, creating inefficiency in the space.

Incorporation of Existing Elements

The couple was adamant about retaining an existing wall cabinet and buffet cabinet in the dining room, showcasing their commitment to preserving cherished aspects of the farmhouse.

How We Helped Them Reach Their Objectives

Ken Spears Construction stepped in to transform the couple’s vision into a reality. Understanding our client’s unique needs and challenges, we devised a comprehensive plan to revitalize their cherished farmhouse.

The transformation began by removing an existing shower adjacent to the kitchen, creating an alcove to house the refrigerator. Closing up an entrance to the powder room from the kitchen allowed for strategically relocating the dishwasher and range, optimizing workflow and functionality. A feature wall was skillfully crafted using their antique wall cabinet. At the same time, the original pass-through window between the kitchen and dining room was reopened, rekindling the sense of connection that had once graced the farmhouse.

In addition to these structural changes, we breathed new life into the space by removing outdated sheet vinyl flooring and refinishing the hardwood floors. The tiled ceiling was replaced, lending the kitchen a fresh and revitalized ambiance.

Design Elements Used

To achieve the perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality, we carefully selected a range of design elements and products that encapsulated the farmhouse’s timeless appeal while introducing modern touches. These included an Elkay Crosstown under mount kitchen sink, a Moen Belfield kitchen faucet, and a backsplash adorned with Matte Designer White 3×6 subway tiles. Cabinets with flat panel doors and slab drawers, made from maple wood in a rich cherry stain, perfectly complemented the farmhouse aesthetic. Countertops of Silestone in the elegant Eternal Calacatta Gold shade added a touch of luxury, while Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige paint tied the entire look together, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
