Rustic Retreat Reborn: A Spa-Like Makeover for a Second Bathroom

After completing the renovation of their main bathroom, our log cabin homeowners were ready to turn their attention to the home’s second bathroom—a space that hadn’t been touched in years. With the potential of their grown son returning to live with them, the couple wanted to ensure this bathroom offered the same level of comfort, character, and intentional design as the recent renovation.

Rather than settling for a quick refresh, they approached the project with a clear vision: transform this overlooked space into a warm, inviting retreat that balances rustic charm with modern functionality. And once again, they partnered with the Ken Spears Construction team to bring that vision to life.

Overview

This secondary bathroom had become less functional over time. The original design featured a cramped, enclosed shower, aging fixtures, and basic vinyl flooring—none of which reflected the style or needs of the homeowners. The space felt more like an afterthought than a welcoming part of the home.

Given the possibility of their son moving back in, the homeowners wanted to ensure this bathroom would offer a comfortable, well-designed environment that didn’t feel like a backup or second-rate space. They knew it had potential, but it needed a full bathroom remodel to get there.

Challenges for the Homeowners

While the homeowners had a clear vision, the existing space presented a number of challenges. Years of use had left the materials tired and outdated. The enclosed shower made the room feel smaller than it actually was, while the vinyl flooring and older fixtures contributed to a utilitarian look that lacked warmth and cohesion.

There was also the issue of light—or the lack of it. With no windows and minimal lighting, the room felt closed off and dim, especially when compared to the bright, airy main bathroom they had just completed. The goal was to create a space that felt equally fresh, functional, and thoughtfully designed.

How We Helped Them Reach Their Goals

We began by addressing the layout. To open up the space, we removed the outdated tub and closed-in shower, replacing them with a custom, glass-enclosed walk-in shower. This instantly improved flow and made the room feel significantly more spacious.

To tackle the lighting challenge, we installed a transom window above the shower. This subtle detail allows natural light to make the space feel airy and open while still remaining private. It was a simple yet impactful change that made a world of difference.

Next, we updated the flooring and shower walls with 12×12 porcelain tile in a warm Craftsman Wheat tone that complements the log cabin’s natural wood aesthetic and brings a fresh, clean texture to the space. For added visual interest, we installed 2×2 mosaic tiles on the shower floor, giving the space depth.

The homeowners wanted a vanity that provided storage, function, and a custom look, so we installed a richly toned wood-style vanity to serve as a focal point and tie into the room’s earthy tones. Polished off with Moen’s Doux brushed nickel faucet and shower trim, the fixtures brought a sleek, modern edge to the rustic surroundings.

To finish the space, we painted the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Smokey Taupe—a soft, calming neutral that created a seamless transition between the tile, wood, and metal finishes.

Project Highlights

The standout element of this remodel is the spacious, glass-enclosed shower paired with the newly installed transom window. Together, they transformed the bathroom from a dark, outdated space into a serene, spa-like retreat. The cohesive use of Craftsman Wheat tile on both the floor and shower walls creates visual continuity, while the mosaic tile shower floor adds just the right amount of texture.

A custom vanity and updated fixtures elevate the room’s style, combining rustic and modern elements in a way that feels effortless. Every material and color choice was carefully selected to complement the surrounding log walls and give the bathroom its own distinct personality—while still feeling like an extension of the rest of the home.

Client Satisfaction

Once again, the homeowners were thrilled with the final result. With both bathrooms now renovated, their log cabin home offers elevated comfort and style throughout. They especially appreciated how our team carried the same attention to detail, craftsmanship, and thoughtful communication throughout the project. Knowing they had a trusted partner in Ken Spears Construction gave them peace of mind and confidence from start to finish.
