Planning Your Project

Planning is the critical step in any remodeling project! Start by critiquing the current area to be remodeled. What works and what doesn't? What is the primary purpose for the space? Match your plan with your lifestyle.

Clip photos of layouts and décor schemes that inspire you. Take time to research your options.

Prioritizing:

Decide what you absolutely need in your new space. Which features would you LIKE to have, and which ones do you NEED to have? You must prioritize your needs.

Establish a Budget:

Establish a budget for the entire project and be open about it with your contractor. Unrealistic expectations can result if you don't convey how much you want to spend and what you hope to get for that amount of money.

If you have to skimp on something now to get what you want later, we would suggest getting a less expensive countertop, flooring or electrical fixtures. These are easy to replace later.

Determine the scope of the job. We can work with you on this. The advice and expertise of a knowledgeable contractor will help you establish the steps that need to be taken to attain the plan you are looking for.

To ensure financial stability, growth at a manageable level, and success by being fiscally responsible. (responsibility, accountability)

Remember cabinetry and other special order items can have lead-times of 4-8 weeks for delivery to your project site. Your project should not start until special order items have arrived. It would be unwise to start construction if the material is not readily available.

If you are going to be doing some of the work yourself, make it at the beginning or at the end of the job. This will make sure our portion isn't delayed and you still save money on the "do it yourself" portion.

Finalize a Plan:

Know exactly where everything will be going. This is a very critical step and should be given the most attention.

Hire a Professional Contractor:

You should hire the contractor you feel the most comfortable with; who you feel will work with you toward the common goal. Honest communication and common values are important to your decision in hiring a contractor a large project. Don't just give the job to the cheapest bidder. "The sweet taste of a low price lasts only a short while. The bitterness of poor quality, service and craftsmanship lasts a lifetime."

Remember, in a large project you could be living with your contractor 5 days a week for 1-6 months!

Your contract should explain all details of the job, including the brand names, model numbers, floor plan, payment terms, scheduling and who is responsible for what.

Preparation:

To prepare for construction, pack your personal items in clearly labeled boxes that can be moved to another part of the home during the project. Remove any items from walls in neighboring rooms. The vibrations from construction can cause pictures to fall.

Daily communication with your project manager should ease the construction process for your family.

Don't forget it's a temporary inconvenience, but a permanent improvement. Have fun with it! Keep a sense of humor.
