The Contractor -Client Relationship: Tips to Make it Work

If you’re planning a home remodel, chances are you’ll be in close contact with your contractor. This contractor-client relationship can be a positive one if you take note of the following tips.Contractor relationship remodel

  1. Setting realistic expectations is a key component of the relationship.  Be honest with your contractor from the beginning about your budget for the project and the remodel you desire. Your contractor will work with you to provide you with the best your money can afford. As with any relationship, clear communication is of the utmost importance.
  2. Stay up to date with the work schedule. If the schedule falls behind, feel free to ask why. A simple explanation about materials or time lines will help put you at ease.
  3. Maintain a consistent vision of your project. As the work gets underway, some stages may seem to move faster than others.  As work such as plumbing or electrical installation are underway, it may appear that the project has come to a halt. Don’t worry; just because you can’t see it easily doesn’t mean that nothing is happening. (See #2).  If possible, avoid making changes to the project scope. They tend to push back the schedule, which ultimately may upset you. If you do decide changes or upgrades are necessary midway through the job, settle the cost different up front with the project manager so there is no misunderstanding.
  4. Recognize your role in the remodeling process, which is conveying your vision. Allow us to perform the work to make that vision a reality. Your input regarding design, craftsmanship, etc. will be incorporated into the job scope before the contract is signed. Once work is underway, give us the freedom to execute the job effectively.  By all means, ask questions if you have concerns, but keep in mind you hired us for a reason.

Remember that maintaining a good contractor-client relationship can give you peace of mind throughout your project. You can be sure we’re committed to providing you with as painless a remodel as possible to make your dream come true!
